Q. How much does a merchant account cost?

A. Usually merchant account processing fees include a per transaction fee, batch closing fee, monthly statement fee, and sometimes chargeback fee. Other fees that may apply are application fee, monthly minimum fee, termination fee, and gateway access fee.

Most business owners generally try to find a merchant payment provider that offers the lowest discount rate. This fee is usually calculated as a percentage to hundreds (basis point) on the gross dollar amount of each transaction and is deducted from your deposit of credit card funds. In some instances, it can be more advantageous to have a higher rate rather than a lower one because the overall impact on an average ticket depends on the way a merchant account is set up.

Q. What are merchant accounts, and does my business need one?

A. Merchant accounts are set up with a financial institution such as banks to allow you to accept credit card payments directly from your clients to be directly deposited into your bank acount. Unlike with most third-party services, such as paypal, money collected from your merchant account is deposited directly into your checking account. You business will want a merchant account if you desire to take credit card payments from your clients using your own business name, and having the money deposited directly into your business checking account.
